ABRIDGE is part of INNOSUNS WE’s R&D&I strategy for the development of industrial technologies focused on the valorisation of biomass and agroforestry by-products, renewable energy production, the circular economy and decarbonisation.

Project Objectives

The objective of ABRIDGE is to develop, optimise and validate an integrated technology for the valorisation of agroforestry by-products and biological waste through pyrolysis and catalytic upgrading of bio-oil, aimed at producing advanced biofuels and other value-added products.

The project investigates the thermochemical conversion of different feedstocks, the production and characterisation of bio-oil and biochar, as well as upgrading and refining processes designed to improve stability, reduce oxygen content and increase the energy potential of the biofuels obtained.

The development aims to contribute to the replacement of fossil fuels, waste valorisation, the circular economy and the decarbonisation of industrial and energy applications, with particular attention to uses related to maritime transport and thermal energy generation.

Environmental Commitment

The ABRIDGE project strictly complies with the “Do No Significant Harm” (DNSH) principle and has obtained an external assessment accredited by ENAC, validating its sustainability and low environmental impact.

Results Achieved – Milestone 1

During the first milestone of the ABRIDGE project, significant scientific and technical progress has been achieved, enabling the continued development and optimisation of the technology:

  • The initial selection and characterisation of agroforestry feedstocks has been completed, including by-products from the olive sector and other biomass sources of interest.

  • The essential experimental infrastructure for pyrolysis and bio-oil upgrading has been installed and commissioned, incorporating the necessary adaptations to ensure reliable operation.

  • Bio-oils and biochars have been produced and characterised from different feedstocks and under different operating conditions.

  • Different upgrading and conditioning solutions for the liquid products obtained have been developed and evaluated, with the aim of improving their stability and quality for subsequent energy applications.

  • 21 experimental upgrading and refining tests have been carried out, generating results that make it possible to identify promising process conditions for reducing oxygen content and improving bio-oil properties.

  • Part of the analytical testing originally planned for a later phase has been brought forward, helping to reduce experimental uncertainty and provide a stronger basis for the activities planned in Milestone 2.

The results obtained confirm the technical feasibility of continuing to optimise the pyrolysis, upgrading and refining pathway proposed in ABRIDGE, while enabling the prioritisation of feedstocks, catalysts, solvents and operating conditions for the next stages of the project.
